...tly from that of the English Gild Merchant. The second period extends from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, and is marked by a bitter conflict between the Gildry and the crafts.
The Gild Merchant or Gildry of Scotch towns first comes to view in the reign of David I (i 1 24-11 53) ^ It must have been a common feature of the royal burghs of Scotland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries *. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries ' 'In many burghs there exists an aggregate body composed of representa- tives of the different [craft] corporations, called the Convenery, or Convener's Court.
