That the past is irrevocable is a law for all men in everything and everywhere. We must consent meekly to bow to this absolute rule of righteousness. We must recognize and accept in it the merciful severity which, to prevent sin, deliberately makes its results evident and abiding, which will never tiy to avert evil and assist goodness by making evil as sweet as goodness.
