    THE REJECTED OLIVE BRANCH.
While instructive, it will also not be devoid of interest, to pausehere, and examine the nature of the Crittenden Resolutions, and also theResolutions of the Peace Congress, which, we have seen, were spurned bythe Secession leaders, through their chief mouthpiece in the UnitedStates Senate.
The Crittenden Compromise Resolutions * were in these words: "A Joint Resolution proposing certain Amendments to the Constitution ofthe United States: "Whereas, serious and alarming dissensions have arisen between theNorthern and the Southern States, concerning the Rights and security ofthe Rights of the Slaveholding States, and especially their Rights inthe common territory of the United States; and whereas, it is eminentlydesirable and proper that these dissensions, which now threaten the veryexistence of this Union, should be permanently quieted and settled byConstitutional provisions which shall do equal justice to all Sections, and thereby restore to the People that peace and good-will which oughtto prevail between all the citizens of the United States; Therefore: "Resolved, by the Senate and House of Representatives of the UnitedStates of America, in Congress assembled, (two thirds of both Housesconcurring), the following articles be, and are hereby proposed andsubmitted as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, whichshall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of saidConstitution, when ratified by Conventions of three-fourths of theseveral States: "Article I.
