"The Church believed in one CONQUEST 125 fold, and she believed that fold to be herself. To those outside the true pale she had nothing to offer — no pardon, no consola- tion, no crown, no conquest — shall I say it ? — 710 hope. The heart of the Church was domi- nated by her intellect. Intellect was her dictator. Tender sym- pathies were strangled in the birth. The Church was inflated with a sense of her supremacy.
