St. Joseph's College was closed, and the Archbishop was left prac- tically without Catholic teachers. But the spirit of the intrepid pioneer and apostle rose superior to the crisis. After journeying to South America, on a collecting tour, to relieve his serious finan- cial embarrassments, he hastened to Montreal, to secure, if possible, new religious teachers for his schools. Meanwhile, with an undaunted faith in the future, he purchased a large unfin- ished frame building in the rising city of Port- land, to be used as an academy and school.
