He was descended from Franciscus Vatablus, Regius Pro...fessor of Hebrew at Paris, France; translator of an edition of the Bible similar to the Zurich edition, published in 1 564, which professed to give the most literal version of the Bible made from the original Hebrew and Greek. The family were Huguenots. Many members held high military positions, and General Vatable served under Napoleon in the Russian expedition. The uncle of the subject, Baron Vatable, was Governor General of the French West Indies under the reign of Louis Phillipe.
Auguste Vatable came to New York with his parents at the age of nine.
