The family were Huguenots. Many members held high military positions, and General Vatable served under Napoleon in the Russian expedition. The uncle of the subject, Baron Vatable, was Governor General of the French West Indies under the reign of Louis Phillipe.
Auguste Vatable came to New York with his parents at the age of nine.
