Gibson, Esq. ; and it is due to that gentleman to say that this is only... one of his many and varied gifts to the inhabitants of this parish ; and I say of him, in the language of one of your own wits, " would that we had a Mr. Gibson planted at every mile. " And let it be recorded that at this point in our history of Ravenstonedale you gave him a good cheer, or a good clap, or both. (Here there was a storm of enthusiastic cheering. ) It will be known to some of you that the trust deeds of this school were lost, and the trustees dead, and the only link of connection between the grammar school and the land was that the rent was regularly paid to the schoolmaster.
