The British who had established themselves in Canada had followed English practice in conveyancing and mortgaging. The Jesuits, who still held their estates, and by French law could grant a lease for nine years only, had lately given leases of twenty-one years, and owners of seigfiei4ries had made concessions of land on higher terms than were allowed by French law.
