Then followed a definite promise of $50,000, on condition that twice that amount should be secured elsewhere in valid pledges, on or before January i, 1901, With this challenge made, of course action in keeping was taken at the soonest. Nothing could be done be- fore commencement; but within a few weeks one- half the amount required had been pledged; and also half of the $50,000, promised had been paid.
