Upon the death of Bellamont at New York in 1701, the ambitious and unpopular Joseph Dudley was appointed governor of the province. His personal application for the office having proved successful, he reached Boston in June, 1702, and soon found himself engaged in a quarrel with that sturdy party of popular men, some of whom had risen against the tyranny of Andros, and still defended, to the utmost of their ability, the rights and privileges of the people.
