The third division, under Governor Shirley of Mas- sachusetts, was to attack Fort Frontenac on Lake Ontario, and Fort Niagara on Lake Erie. Finally, the fourth division, under Sir William Johnson, who lived in New York, and was well known among the Mohawk Indians, whom he hoped to induce to join his troops, was to attack two principal strongholds of the French known as Crown Point and Ticonderoga.
