I. The Benefit to the Nation consists in the greatest of all natural blessings, a plentiful and settled supply of food, chiefly the growth of our own soil. Yet the people are now better fed, and the blessings of a variety of good and cheap food are more widely diffused than at any former period of our country's history. Thus we see that, in half a century, two people have to be siistained where only one existed before, in England and A¥ales ; and the increase for the whole area of Great Britain is less than this only by some 10 per cent.
