The indignation of the pa...tricians and of the old commons on this occasion was so great, that the senators laid aside their gold rings, and the young patricians, and wealthy commoners who formed tTie equestrian order, put off their chains of honor (phalerae), as if so great a dishonor to the commonwealth required a general mourning. It should be remembered that the curule aedileship'was at this time an office of high distinction, and that every curule magistracy was supposed to convey something of kingly and there- fore of sacred dignity ; so that it was a profanation if it were bestowed on a freed man's son, although he might have held the tribuneship of the commons without offence.
