It was while living here that a large party of Comanches, Cheyennes and Arapahoe Indians sud- denly appeared before the house. Carson believed from their actions that they were hostile, and, calling his wife and niece into a room in the building, told them that he only had two shots in his pistol, and that the moment the Indians should succeed in entering the door, something he expected to happen immediately, he intended to shoot them both; but the Indians did not make the anticipated assault.
...In the year 1854, Carson was appointed Indian agent for the Ute, Apache and Pueblo tribes. He held this office until 1861. In the preceding year Carson accompanied a party of friends on a trip from Taos to the San Juan country, in the northwestern part of New Mexico. While on this journey his horse fell with him, injuring him very badly. He never fully recovered from the effects of this fall, and it is believed that the injuries received were the cause of his death eight years later.
