"Hops were c...ultivated about eighty years ago, by Calvin Stebbins. The mulberry fever raged eighty years ago, much to the pecuniary damage of many speculators. "Grafted fruit took the place, at about the same time, of the old varieties or cider apples. Flax ceased to be cultivated at the same time. Hemp was raised by a few farmers in the war of 1812. "Piscatory. — It was considered disreputable in early times for farmers to go after shad. They were said by their neighbors to be 'out of pork. ' Hence, persons, going for shad, went in the morning before their neighbors were up, and did not return till they were in bed.
