It was so big around that a man could climb down inside to clean it. I asked mother how water gets into wells. She explained that "the rain soaks into the earth. It goes down, down, down through the soil until it comes to a soft rock whose grains are so far apart that water can make its way through. This is called porous rock. Below the porous rock is often found a layer of other rock so hard that the water cannot soak into it.
