ON that day, Wednesday, August 20th, Chief Little Crow made an attack upon Fort Ridgely, situated about eighteen miles northwest of New Ulm. The assault was made between 2 and 3 o clock in the afternoon, just as soon as the Indians who had attacked New Ulm had returned and joined him.
Little Crow, the leader in the outbreak, belonged to the civilized Indians. As such he had been at Washington several times in co...nnection with Indian affairs. He was shrewd, calculating and talented; but his ambition knew no bounds. Though civilized, and like many others acting the part of a civilized man while concealing his real nature, he was so intimately acquainted with Indian affairs, and understood so well the numer ous and notorious wrongs which they had suffered at the hands of white men, that he hated them with a most bitter hatred.
