Protaldy in the chronicles is the par- amour of Brunhalt, but a man ' ' subtil et habile en toutes actions;" 1 in the play he is developed into the utter poltroon and supplies the comic element. He reminds one very closely of Bessus in A King and No King. Brunhalt and Thierry are at least outlined in the history, but in the play they are developed much as their prototypes are developed in Cupid' s Revenge from a similar outline in the Arcadia.
