HE topic assigned to us does not lead into disputed interpretation of ancient oracles, or a discussion of the origin and rationale of religious belief; what is proposed is to apply to the religious systems known as Judaism and Christianity the practical test of usefulness to mankind. Let us compare them as respects the power to bless the world at large which each of them has shown in the course of history.
When, ho...wever, we apply such a test to religion any religion — we must keep certain conditions and explanations in view; e. G. (i. ) We do not seize on this as a primary and fundamental test of truth. Enough that proved usefulness supplies a presump- tion in support of a religious system before its truth has been otherwise investigated, and a corroboration of the verdict when an investigation has issued favourably; for all who believe in God and in His beneficent government of the world, must admit that no COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF JUDAISM a true religion, pleasing to Him, must be expected to have a loving aspect towards mankind, and to pro- duce good and happy results wherever its influence extends.
