With a slender const...itution and a pulmonary tendency, his ambition led him to assume duties and re- sponsibilities which overtaxed his physical strength, and losing his health while yet in the meridian of life and in the midst of usefulness, he transferred his large practice in 1834 to Dr. Richard S. Kissam, Junior, a son of his medical precep- tor, to whose practice he himself had succeeded when the father died.
Early in the following winter he visited the West Indies with a hope of regaining some of his strength.
