" Why" says he, " should we renounce our right to a critical investigation of the Mishna and the Gemara? . . . Are we to be fettered by the decisions of later authorities? . . . We recognise only one reve- lation ; and it is our incontestable duty to ponder on its behests, and to regulate our lives in accordance with the results furnished by such scrutiny.
