With the blare of men's voices, and the glare of electric lights, and the stale odors of tobacco and liquor only a few feet from him, he saw only the soft radiance of the star,^ he heard only the gentle murmur of the birds in their nests, and only the fragrance of the earth imder the heavy dews of a summit night was in his nostrils. He was alone with his heart and its new sweet knowledge.
