Vanced in person to chastise the rebellious province. From York to Durham, a tract of sixty miles, the march of the Norman army was traced in characters of blood ; the inhabitants were devoted to indiscriminate slaughter ; the villages were left smoking in ashes ; and even the convents and monasteries were involved undistinguished in the common destruction.
