The Council decided that Almagro must not occupy the city until the question of the boundary was settled. On the same night, however, the 8th of April, 1537, Almagro forced his way into the city, and threw Hernando Pizarro into prison, on pretence that he was fortifying his position, contrary to the terms of the truce.
This latter version is, I believe, the true one, and excuses Almagro's apparent breach of faith. Don Alonzo gives an account of the trans- action in two other places further on, ...in a letter to the emperor, and in a paper of accusations against Ilornaudo Pizarro.
