ALONG poem, which he called by the title of " Two Worlds," appears to have been Winthrop's next sustained effort. It was evidently written with a view to publication and afterwards thrown aside, as he be- came more fascinated with the idea of prose writing, or more aware of the difficulties of... this undertaking.
It appeared at first too unfinished to give to the public, but upon careful study it seemed only necessary to cut off redundancies to show that it is one of his best works, and worthy of his reputation. A sort of novel in blank verse, it is full of youth, force, and the fresh spirit of life and travel, noble soldierly thoughts, and strange presentiments; the retreating wave of adventure, carry- ing with it the rich experience of these varied, crowded years. The prophetic references to a soldier's death cannot fail to strike every reader.
