The indomitable energy and untiring industry of Mr. Polk, however, successfullv performed this Herculean task, and he came ofl' victor in 1S39 with a majority of i2, 6G9, making a Demo- cratii gain in the State of something over 22, 000 votes. In doing this, he abandoned iiduc of his political principles, but maintained what was called his '' ultraism'' and " radicalisni"' with the same JAMES K. POLK. 15 uncompromising sternness that distinguished him while holding a seat in Congress.
