But the real occasion of the war which was on the eve of explosion was the recognition of the Pretender by Louis on the death of James II in the autumn of 1701. " He showed the compilation to a member of the council, who caused it to be published.
Early in May " most astonishing accounts came of the sufferings of Protestants in the French king's galleys, and of the Lord's wonderful works in supporting them under sufferings, and the converting of some at the sight. " Mr. Mather showed an Abstract of these ac- counts to the ministers at their weekly meeting, and caused it to be published under the title, " A Letter con- cerning the Sufferings of our Protestant Brethren.
