155 negro servants in the town had few privileges, and though not in the abject condition of chattel slaves in the south, were yet at the bottom in the social scale, and were, for the most part, ignorant, and were treated with contempt.
But the following citation proves that some of them had a desire to improve their state, and knew to whom they could apply. The diary reads : " Besides other praying and pious meetings which I have been continually serving in my neighborhood, a little after this
... time a company of poor negroes, of their own accord, addressed me for my countenance to a design which they had of erecting such a meeting for the welfare of their miserable nation that were servants among us. I allowed their design, and went one evening, and prayed, and preached with them, and gave them the following orders." These he inserted in his diary "for the curiosity of the occasion." The object of the association was to promote Christian charac- ter and good moral conduct ; and the means to be used was expressed in the first article in the words following : I.
