Drum- mond, the bankers, that the money awarded by Parliament had been paid to his accoun...t by the Treasury; but the pleasure of this announce- ment was much qualified by other communica- tions received at the same time; the first of these being a request from one of his parlia- mentary friends for a loan of one thousand, out of the five thousand pounds, he had assisted to procure. To this, however, Mr. Crompton did not, and probably could not prudently, accede.

XV.] LIFE OF SAMUEL CROMPTON. 187 The expenses attendant upon his journeys through England, Scotland, and Ireland, in search of statistics ; the travelling and other expenses of his witnesses ; his long residence in London ; and the neglect of business not only by himself but by his family — his two eldest sons being then entirely occupied by their military duties as officers in a militia regiment under arms, — must have melted down the five thousand pounds by anticipation, to a compara- tively small sum.
