Without orders from head-quarters he dare not allow their departure, or venture to relax the usual camp discipline to secure and protect his position. This would have been a dangerous breach of a high military duty. Many persons, and among them a member of the State Legislature of Louis- iana, were engaged in fomenting the discontent wMcli was fast spreading among his men, and threatening seri- ous consequences.
