Mr. Calhotun's able talents, and the still more able support which he gave to the war, that had termi- MARTIN VAN BLREN. 97 nated so gloriously for America, made him ex- tremely popular everywhere, hut more especially with the army and navy. He was well known to he the particular favourite and confidant of the late president Monroe. The great state of Pennsylva- nia and Connecticut were ready to give him their support ; and, indeed, his prospects w^ere as flatter- ing as any of the other expect...ants. But, being much the youngest man, and willing to secure, by a longer probation of public service, a higher claim to such a distinguished honour, he very magnani- mously retired from the contest, and with all his great character, influence, and abilities, went over to the support of Andrew Jackson, contented w4th the evidence of public esteem and confidence in the lower but second oflice of the government. How this generous friendship has been rewarded by General Jackson the sequel will show.
