To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It is a most uncomfortable book — is not that like Lord Byron ? And lastly, it is all full of the sneering misanthropic wretched author ; is not that Lord Byron ? If not written by him, it is cert...ainly in his chsiracter ; and a very powerful work it is for good and for evil — a sort of Eastern * Gil Bias' — only bloodier, longer, less attractive.
