It affords me great pleasure to reflect on the intimate and delightful intercourse which I have enjoyed with yourself and your predecessor in the ministry, in this city, the venerable John Williams; and with other excellent brethren with whom we were associated. There has been a cordial union of spirit and of action in all the great measures in which we have been engaged to advance the king- dom of our Lord. In the great conflict which we had in the American Bible Society with our pseudo- bapti...st brethren, we were placed in the minority, for all the different denominations combined against us; yet we remained unterrified by our ad- versaries, boldly maintaining, that the inspired originals were the only standard to the translators of the Sacred Scriptures, and that all their trans- 109 lations must be made, not in conformity to the jar- ring views of the different sects and parties em- braced in that Institution, but in exact conformity to the inspired oracles of God. We were nobly sustained, with a very few exceptions, by our Bap- tist brethren in England and America, in maintain- ing the great principle, that the Bible ought to be faithfully and completely translated into all the languages of the nations, without human addition, diminution or concealment.
