On 26th Sep- tember Bentinck wrote a letter from Madrid dis- cussing whether the Spanish armies could drive the French out oi Spain without the help of the English or not, and also whether the Spanish Government would be willing, in the event of an Austrian war, to join the British in invading France.

By the end of October there were 170,000 French troops in Spain, of which 116,000 were on the Ebro ; and on 15th November there were 335,000 French troops in Spain, of whom over 255,000 were avail- able for operations.
