Maydon, who was with French at the time as a war correspondent, in his book entitled FrencKs Cavalry Ca7npaign. He says :- " Round Colesberg on a small scale the plan was being tried with com- plete success that was so shortly to be ap]»lied by the Field-Marshal [Roberts] on tlie grand scale, and which in a few weeks was to revolutionise the whole course of the war. As it happens, the Genera], who from comparative obscurity had issued to keep aloft and unrepxilsed the ancient banner, was to be selected as the executive arm in the wider field so soon to be opened.
