To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

So usually careful a writer as Sir Henry Yule put it in his Glossary as the 23rd of February; but when the Rev. R B.
Raffles wrote pointing out that the date must be the 29 th of January, Tule admitted the mistake, and, without contro- versy, accepted the emendation. In connection with the statue to his cousin at Singapore, imveiled in 1887, Mr.
Digitized by VjOOQIC THE FOUNDING OF SINGAPORE 307 Eaffles also wrote to the Governor on this question ; and, in a volume of the Straits Branch of the
...Eoyal Asiatic Society, entitled Notes and Queries No, 4, issued with No. 17 of the Journal, his letter setting right this important point is duly recorded. I may add that in the records of the Political Department at the India Office, the correct date is given, viz.
the 29th of January 1819.
In a lengthy despatch, dated 13th February 1819, to Mr. Adam, Secretary to Government, Eaffles wrote : " I have now the satisfftction to report, for the information of the Most Noble the Governor-General in Council, that those objects have been fully and substantially accomplished, and that a British Station commanding the southern entrance of the Straits of Malacca, and combining extraordinary local advantages with a peculiarly admirable geographical position, hjis been established at Singapore, the ancient capital of the King of Johore, on terms and conditions which I trust will meet the approbation and confirmation of his Lordship in Council" Eaffles then proceeded to state that, in the first place, he went, at Major Farquhar's request, to Carimon, but '* the position on the whole was not sufficiently inviting.
