Baird continued his jour- ney by steamer to St. Petersburg, touching on the way at Abo, in Finland, and then at Helsingfors, the modern capi- tal. It was Mr. Baird's earnest desire to be instrumental in setting tlie Temperance reformation in Russia into successful operation ; hoping that the time might not be far distant when a spectacle similar to that witnessed in Sweden might greet the eyes of the Christian philanthropist. To efforts in this direction he was prompted not a little by the convic- tion that such a reform would necessarily be the entering wedge for the introduction of further improvement, both in religion and in morals.
