It gives a short statement of the law of Scotland on the subject of weights and measures, with tables and rules for the conversion of those used customarily in different parts of the country into the standard weights and mea- sures of Scotland and England. But it appears to have had little ch- no influence.
In England, though the discrepancies were not so great, the same incon- veniences had long been felt, from the diversity of weights and measures, as in Scotland, and efforts had early been m...ade to obviate them. A law of King Edgar ordered that the same weights and measures should be used throughout the realm. There is a clause to the same effect in Magna Charta; and various Acts of Parliament were subsequently passed, en- joining the use of the same weights and measures, under severe penalties.
But owing to the inveteracy of ancient customs, and the diificulty of en- forcing new regulations, these statutes had a very limited influence, and the greatest variety continued to prevail, except in lineal measures.
