Then suddenly it struck him that the place was unu...sually quiet. "What's the matter?" he said aloud. "The pumps aren't working. " He heard the voices of the men at the far end of the tunnel. Placing a foot on the edge of the big steel bucket and seizing the cable to steady him- self, he leaped across the shaft and landed on solid footing between the rails. Giving his lamp another shake he started off along the narrow track, his eyes peering before him into the pitchy blackness of underground. A hundred feet or so from the shaft he saw a point of light approaching him out of the darkness ahead.
