What a mockery that this petition should rest so constantly upon our lips, if whenever God's will thwarts ours, we choose ours in preference to His, and thus day after day speeds along without an attempt at self-denial, and while we profess (odious hypocrisy!) to be looking to His Cross for forgiveness, we never dream of taking up our own and bearing it after Him. And yet what inward peace would there be in bearing it! in annihilating our own will, so far as it is at all at ...variance with God's, and in seeking, with great simplicity and an entire unreservedness, to be and to do all that He would have us to be and to do ! For the corrupt will of man is the source of all the discomposure and fretful- ness which find place in the human heart. It 156 Thy Will be Done is the deeply-seated source of sin, and therefore of labour and trouble.
Alas! how many are there who are more or less willing to acquiesce in God's dispensations, and more than willing, really desirous, to receive the gracious influences of God's Spirit, who have no mind at all to bestir themselves in the putting away of sin, in the correction of faults of character, in the amendment of bad habits, in the cultivation of Christian graces, in the attainment of holiness!
