There has been a tendency on the part 28 THE MAKING OF RELIGION of religious men to escape from the contact with serious thought. I have often heard persons speaking of an intellectual reaction against liberalism in these days. I have seen no evidence whatever of any such intellectual reaction, except this — that many persons who ought to be thinking quite seriously have given up the habit.
