This officer told him that, being in Australia, he was obliged to leave the modern cruiser that he then commanded and to sail for the Pacific Islands on a cruise in a venerable relic of a sloop that had been left out on the station 20.^ The... Man-of-War awaiting the time that she should either be sold out of the service or broken up, and this relic was fitted with the masts and yards of her day. The captain and his first lieutenant were the only persons of any sort or kind in the ship's company who had ever been trained in the management of a sailing craft ; to the men she was as strange, and indeed much stranger than the Santa Maria (the ship in which Columbus sailed to America in 1492) would have been to a sailor of, say, 1870. The captain was afraid that his men would regard this return to the conditions of bygone generations with which they were totally unacquainted — and which further could be of no possible use to them in furthering their careers in the service in the future — as a most unmitigated bore and trouble.
