Above all, party politics were his darling pursuit. He connected himself as intimately as he could with the patriots of the day ; and was extravagantly elated with an introduction to the celebrated city magistrate, Mr. Beckford. Soon finding, how- ever, that money was scarce on the opposition side, he observed to a friend, that he was a p...oor author who could not write on both sides ; and he was not long in adopting this prudential maxim. For a time, it appears, that he indulged himself in the most sanguine hopes of attaining distinction and affluence by the exertions of his pen ; and his letters to his friends were filled with visionary prospects of this sort, partially excusable in a youth not eighteen. It is right to men- tion, as a proof of the tenderness of his social affections, that the prospect of being able to assist his family, and raise them from their humble sphere, appears to have given him peculiar pleasure ; nor did he omit to send them little presents out of his first gains.
