Nancy had heard of Sarah's return after the Wayne Indian treaty, but it seemed too good to be true, to go off in a corner and sit with Sarah's arm around her and hear about the five years of captivity with the old squaw in the tepee. Such stories were a never fail- ing diversion from her loss.
"Let me tell you about what the Indian did when he found your chewed rope that morning," Sarah would offer if she waked and found Nancy deep in the tears of mother hunger in the dead of night on the pillo...w next to hers.

And with Sarah in it the Berry home was a real home for Nancy the next decade of her life. The house was wide and comfort- able and very typical of the homes that the pioneers achieved for themselves, after the days of "settling" had passed.
