It is one of the seven cities that have claimed to be the birthplace of Homer ; it was also one of the seven cities addressed by John in the Book of Revelation. Under the Lydian kings, Smyrna rose to be one of the greatest of the cities of Asia ; was rebuilt by Marcus Aurelius, after having been destroyed by an earthquake in 178 A.D.
