of the People, was bom May 12, 1802, in Burgundy; and educated at D\jon, which he left in 1819 to prepare for the stage. He became ono of the most able and promising pupils, of Talma, whom he strikingly resembles in gesture and intona- tion. He afterwards studied for the bar, and was a feUow-pupil with Baroche and Chaix d'Est Ange, bidding fair to rival both in talent and popularity. In tJie capital he residod with a celebrated advocate of the Court of Cassation, and made the acquaintance of Be...rryer, the great Legitimist la,wyer, the Abb^ Gerbert, and the eccentric Lamennais.
About this time he renounced the sceptical opinions he had imbibed at Dijon, and became an attached member of the; Church of Rome. In 1824 he entered the Seminary of St. Sulpice to study for tho priesthood, and was ordained 22d September, 1827. It has often been remarked, that ih^re reigns in the whole person of Lacordaire a certain.
