The Mexicans fired at the American guns, while the Americans aimed at the masses of the foe. The slaughter, consequently, was very unequal. Moreover, to avoid the fire as far as possible, the Americans had been ordered to deploy into line, all except the eighth infantry, which continued in column ; and, when the battle began, the men were further directed to lie down. The wagons had been formed into a park in the rear, near which the dragoons remained.
