The French gardeners often train an apple tree " en cordon horizontale," as an edging to the borders in their kitchen gardens, after the following mode : — A Fig. 13.
tree grafted on the Paradise or Doucin stock, with a single ...shoot, is planted in a sloping position, and the shoot trained along a wire, about ten or twelve inches from the surface. (Fig. 13.) To carry out this method of training, oak posts, about three inches in diameter and two feet in length, should be sharpened at one end and driven into the ground, so that they stand one foot above the surface ; they may be from thirty to forty yards distant from each other.
