But God has no place in His book of remembrance for those who only make a living, who are simply occupied with self- preservation, and fail to do the work which He has ap- pointed. It will be remembered that on the day when they came out of Egypt a new name was given to the people : " And it came to pass, at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all THE HOSTS OF THE LORD went out from the land of Eg...ypt " (Exod. Xii. 40). And again, in the last verse of the same chapter : " And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the Lord did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt dy tJieir armies^ It was on that '' selfsame day " that they began to live : " This shall be to you the beginning of months. " From that time onward, through all their murmurings and rebellions, they never entirely lost their standing as the hosts of the Lord. They had followed on in the way the Lord had led them from Succoth to Sinai.
