The education of Mrs. Bradford had not been thorough. A little of almost everything taught in fashionable schools she had learned; yet nothing had been so fully acquired as to give her a teacher's proficiency. She had a fair acquaintance with French, and could speak it with some fluency ; but possessed no critical knowledge of the language. She could draw tolerably well ; but had no taste for the beautiful art. For years her music had been neglected. So far, therefore, as her early edu- cation ...was concerned, it availed her little or nothing in the present trying position of affairs. " What shall I do ?" How sadly, almost hopelessly, over and over again did Mrs. Bradford repeat these words ! and yet there was not even an echo to the question. One day it was mentioned in her presence that the 138 PASSING THEOUan THE FIRE. matron of a certain charitable institution had resigned her place, and that the Board of Directors were about appoint- ing another. It flashed through her mind that here was a chance for her ; but with the thought pride awoke, and her cheeks burned as she imagined herself in the position of a matron where she had once been a lady patroness.
